Plant your Garlic in a spot not recently used for garlic or other plants from the onion family. Plant garlic in areas where there is good drainage, A raised bed works very well and avoid areas with a lot of stones or remove stones from the top layer of soil. Use quality seed garlic and try planting several different varieties just in case one does poorly. Separate the cloves no more than 48 hours before planting.
Even though garlic is very easy to plant, it is very important that you have the best soil if you want to produce the biggest bulbs. You need rich, good quality and well drain soil, I usually add compost and well-rotted manure to the bed before planting. you can also add organic fertilizers in the bed or hole before planting.
Plant Garlic with the peels intact and about 4 – 6 inches deep and about 6 inches apart , plant the garlic with the pointy end up and cover with fine soil and press lightly. add a layer of chop leaves, seedless straw, mulch or grass clippings to help insulate it from the extreme winter temperatures. the leaves, straw or mulch will also
help control weeds on the garden bed during the growing season.
Plant cloves as early in spring as you can work the soil, Spring planted garlic should be planted the same manner as in the fall. The planted garlic will form roots but little top growth in the fall before the ground freezes. In the spring, your garlic will be ready to grow, sending up tiny green shoots with better root growth as soon as the ground thaws.
