Tips for Growing in a Raised Bed

Location

The top tip and advantage of a raised bed is Location, With a raised bed you can choose where to put your raised bed.

Make sure you put your raised bed in a south-facing location so that your plants get enough sunlight.

Used best quality compost to Make raised bed mix

Use the best quality compost or raised bed soil to fill the raised bed. since you are planting above ground

unlike planting in a regular garden bed which allows the plant roots to extend to other areas to get more nutrients, with raised garden beds, the plants will not be able to do that. it needs to have all the required nutrients in that bed in order to grow. Make sure your raise bed soil has some at least 40 percent good quality compost,

here is what you need to make a raised bed soil mix

40%+ of good quality compost

10% + of worm castings

add a combination of any of these if you have it to finish the remaining portion.

mushroom compost if you have it

aged ground bark

composted cow or animal or poultry manure (not cow manure)

Shredded leaves

a small amount of peat moss or coco peat or any other water-retaining material mix with compost.

Keep the Soil Moist

Since most of the soil is above ground, the soil will dry out much quicker than a regular garden bed, the smaller the raised bed the quicker it will dry out, so water it regularly. In very hot days water it twice. this will help keep the roots moist and the plants will not be stressed.

Mulch your raised garden bed

Mulching your raised garden bed has several benefits

first, it will help maintain the soil moisture and prevent the soil from drying out quickly.

secondly, mulching will help prevent weeds from going on your raise bed so you don’t have to waste your valuable time removing tons of weeds.

thirdly if you use wood chips, grass clippings, or shredded leaves as mulch, they will decompose and improve the soil quality in the raised bed.

Don’t use wood treated chemical

If you are making your raised bed with wood, do not use any wood treated with chemicals to make your raised garden bed, if you use wood treated with chemicals, the chemicals might get into your soil and then your plants.

Give yourself enough space

Give yourself enough space to walk around the raised bed especially if you have multiple raised beds close to each other. you also want to make sure that the raised bed is too wide. If the raised bed is too wide, you will not be able to easily get to the middle part of the raised bed.

Top-Dress Annually with Compost

At the beginning of every season, top-Dress your raised garden beds annually with Compost. usually, your nutrient level in the soil will be depleted and the soil level drops. so it is best to add some compost to the raised bed to replenish it.
